Auke Annema (25)

Joined BigMile in June 2021

What do you do at BigMile?

‘In June 2021 I joined Districon as a BI consultant. From day 1 I spent fifty percent of my time there working for BigMile. I have a strong interest in the transport sector and in data. These worlds come together at BigMile. I liked it so much that from June 2022 I transferred to BigMile to work there full-time. In my new role as a business consultant, I help new customers with onboarding and their data challenges. I also work on the Port of Rotterdam project.’

What do you like about your work at BigMile?

‘I enjoy working with like-minded people who believe it is rapidly becoming increasingly important that all stakeholders in the supply chain are connected to a standard CO2 calculation platform, and that BigMile is the go-to software platform for that. At the same time, I am working on a good cause, helping companies reduce their carbon emissions. I get to see a lot of different environments and meet new meet people every day. Every day is different at BigMile, there is no day that’s the same.’

How often do you go to the office and what is the first thing you do when you get there?

‘On average I am on the road, visiting customers, twice a week. I come to the office once or twice a week. Because I have a long commute, I leave the house early and I am usually one of the first ones to arrive at the office. The first thing I do is get coffee, often even before taking off my coat. Then I start answering emails. That gets me up to speed before the first co-worker arrives.’

If you had to teach someone else something, what would it be?

‘That would be the Frisian language. The Frisian language is spoken alongside Dutch by about 500,000 Frisian people, who live on the southern fringes of the North Sea in the Netherlands and Germany. It is an official language, and I was brought up with it. At my parents’ house we speak Frisian. People often ask me to translate all kinds of things.’

What superpower would you like to have?

‘Renowned for its beautiful nature, Friesland is home to loads of glimmering lakes and rugged islands, which make for some fantastic watersports. I spend a lot of time on or in the water, waterskiing, boating and in the winter of course skating! I also like to ride my motorcycle. That is why I believe it would be great to be able to influence the weather. Then I could enjoy my hobbies every weekend!’
