Backend Engineer (full-time)

About the role

As a Backend Engineer, you’ll work closely with the team to develop new features for our core product while also contributing to experimental projects. You will balance innovation with maintaining a solid, reliable platform, reducing technical debt, and working with cutting-edge tools and technologies.

BigMile is a leading SaaS company focused on helping businesses calculate and reduce their CO2 emissions in the supply chain. With our platform, companies can visualize and manage their logistics carbon footprint, helping them to meet sustainability goals and comply with environmental regulations. We work in two autonomous development teams, each with backend and frontend capability. You’ll join one of them.

About you

You thrive in collaborative environments and enjoy sharing your knowledge while learning from others. You’re proactive, solution-oriented, and always looking for ways to improve systems. With a strong foundation in backend engineering and infrastructure, you’re comfortable fine-tuning Kubernetes clusters, optimizing backend services, and ensuring scalability and reliability.

Skills & Experience

• Proficient in TypeScript (NestJS) and Kubernetes
• Familiar with databases like ClickHouse, PostgreSQL, and messaging systems like Kafka
• Experience with DevOps practices and infrastructure
• Excellent communication skills, team-oriented, approachable, and open to asking questions
• Passionate about sustainability, with an interest in data and logistics (a plus)
• Available full-time (4 or 5 days per week)

What you’ll do

• Improve and maintain one of our many APIs. For example by building a new endpoint that lets the frontend save user preferences.
• Monitor and investigate Prometheus alerts, identify root causes, and work on long-term fixes. A recent example: improving Kafka error handling (or swearing at YAML).
• Identify weak spots in our platform, brainstorm alternatives, and selling it internally to get priority. Our latest target? Replacing Redis messaging with Kafka.

About the team

You’ll join a dynamic team of backend and frontend developers based primarily in the Netherlands and Poland. We work mostly remote, utilizing our virtual office in Gather. We like to learn and improve, and when we see the opportunity, a good idea or suggestion can be adopted right-away.

We start our days with a standup, sharing about our weekend or last night and meet each other consistently during the day. Most often sharing our screens. We share responsibility and work when deadlines are near and do not believe in git blaming each other (as we fail as a team ☺)

Our application ecosystem is pretty cool (if we do say so ourselves). We’ve got a variety of APIs running on our Kubernetes cluster—some are client-facing, others power our internal systems. Kafka helps us keep the data flowing, and we manage loads of emissions data in our databases to support sustainability goals.
