iBarge integrates BigMile for special CO2 module

The iBarge app is integrating BigMile for the inland shipping sector. The app, which enables skippers and freighters to conveniently submit voyage data, planning details and other information, will soon have a special CO2 module. This will give chartering offices and barge operators insight into emissions data for their own accounting and reporting purposes. “CO2 reduction is an issue for the whole supply chain. We are keen to play a facilitating role in this as an ICT partner,” says Marius Hakkesteegt, Business Developer at iBarge.

The digital transformation is well underway in inland shipping. The iBarge app is one of a growing number of digital tools that support information sharing and transparency. It enables skippers to indicate their voyage status, exchange documents digitally and share relevant information about availability with their customers. “Thanks to BigMile, the new CO2 module in iBarge automatically adds information about CO2 emissions to these data streams,” says Ilona Kuipers, Product Owner at iBarge.

“BigMile is fed with data from iBarge as the basis for its calculations. These are then forwarded to the relevant charterer’s back-office system via the BigMile Emission API,” Kuipers explains. “Since this is then used for reporting throughout the transport value chain, the skippers are not burdened with extra work. Moreover, it is a secure system because the data is not stored in iBarge or BigMile, and it is not made public.”

Bringing data streams together

Inland barges are more energy-efficient than trucks because a single barge can carry a much larger volume of cargo. However, the wide variety of vessel types makes it much more difficult to measure the CO2 emissions of inland shipping than of road transport. “We help the inland shipping sector by bringing together multiple data streams in a single software solution. This gives charterers the right tools to make emissions transparent and comparable,” states Marius Hakkesteegt.
