We spoke with Tom van Dam, the Chief Operating Officer, about how the BigMile Emissions API is enabling DeilveryMatch's customers to provide insights on the carbon impact of each shipment, e.g. to directly on the checkout pages of their websites.

Increasing customer expectations for environmental impact insights

Five years ago, DeliveryMatch noticed that more and more customers were requesting insights into the environmental impact of their shipments.

With new regulations requiring companies to report CO2 emissions from their logistics operations, such as the EU’s CSRD, DeliveryMatch saw an opportunity to add real-time CO2 calculations into their platform.

Giving clients eco-friendly shipping choices at checkout

In 2020, DeliveryMatch partnered with BigMile to integrate BigMile’s CO2 calculation API into their transport management system. This integration offers a unique value proposition in the market, allowing the platform’s customers to calculate the environmental impact of their shipments in real-time.

Tom explains: “Before partnering with BigMile, we couldn’t offer real-time CO2 calculations. The integration has made it easy for us to provide this data, helping our customers stay compliant with regulations and make more responsible logistics decisions.”

Both B2C and B2B companies using the platform, like Moonen Packaging, can report their CO2 impact per shipment, helping them to make more sustainable choices. Currently,  webshops, wholesalers, manufacturers, carriers and logistics service providers are using this integration.

A simple integration for easy CO2 calculations

The integration of the BigMile Emissions API was smooth and straightforward, and it is available to all DeliveryMatch customers, without the need for extra development or customization.

With DeliveryMatch’s detailed shipment data, such as carrier, size, weight, and delivery location, customers can quickly calculate CO2 emissions using BigMile’s certified methodology.

Tom explains: “The integration is plug-and-play. Once a customer requests CO2 calculation, we can implement it quickly. This makes the process easy for our clients and helps them meet their sustainability goals with minimal effort.”

The fact that DeliveryMatch can offer CO2 calculations to customers came at just the right time, as customers are asking for it more and more.

How the partnership between DeliveryMatch and BigMile drives client acquisition

The collaboration has already had a strong impact on the management platform’s customer base. Tom points out that the company is now bringing in new clients every week, all of whom want to integrate CO2 calculations into their logistics processes. This shift is driven by both new regulations and the growing demand for transparency and responsibility in business operations.

Tom shares: “Right now, about 10% of our customers are actively using the BigMile Emissions API. That number is growing quickly, especially with the new requirement for businesses to report CO2 emissions starting January 1st, 2025. We're already seeing clients reaching out for this feature to help with their compliance efforts.”

With the increasing demand for CO2 emissions calculations, it’s clear that the partnership between DeliveryMatch and BigMile is a perfect fit. Last year, the companies have calculated 750.000 shipments' CO2 emissions together.

“The unique proposition for e-commerce businesses of DeliveryMatch and BigMile is that we can show emissions directly in the webshop checkout process by displaying the environmental impact of all available delivery options, helping customers make conscious, sustainable choices.”

ISO-certified CO2 calculations for valid client reports

For DeliveryMatch, BigMile’s reliable service and flexible approach, along with its ISO-certified CO2 calculation capabilities, make it the ideal sustainability partner.

Tom explains: “BigMile's certification is key to validating our clients' CO2 reports. We appreciate their transparency and quick communication, which have been crucial to our successful collaboration.”

With the BigMile Emissions API now available to all customers, DeliveryMatch is in a strong position to keep driving positive change in the logistics industry.
